Day 123 - Thursday - Falling is not much Fun
Thursday morning I drive us back down to Cedar
City in the car. The reading is at 9:30am in the studio theater, and we arrive in time to grab
some coffee first. It's not the first
reading so the actors (all professionals from the Festival) are into the
parts. We enjoy the 2 hour show, which
provides the "back story" of why Gertrude married Claudius, Hamlet's
uncle, after Claudius had murdered his brother the king, Hamlet's father.
We see a few "holes" in the script. Brian Vaughn leads a lively interchange with
the audience and we have a stimulating half hour, with ideas batted back and
forth. The play will have its premiere
in Florida next year and I hope
we'll be able to see the finished version some time in the future.
This is the first time we've attended one of these readings
- the festival workshops 2 new plays each year.
We both agree that although we can't attend this year's second offering
we'll add these to our calendar in the future.
Play reading over, the day is ours. We lunch at Park
Place - another healthy eatery with inventive
sandwiches and salads. Today I enjoy a
roast beef creation. We decide to walk
across the road to try to find the raspberry fudge that's always a highlight of
Cedar City
for me. The university bookstore where I
usually buy it has closed, and we hope the ice cream and fudge shop will have
it.
As I go to cross the road I trip over a partly open manhole
cover and fall forwards, breaking the fall with my hands. In this wonderful town no less than 8 people
immediately come over to help, including 2 cars that stop to see what they can
do. I'm able to get up without help and
the only damages appear to be scrapes on my right and and right knee, and a
slight pain around my left thumb, so it's time for fudge.
As I try to open the shop door with my left hand I feel a
sharp pain. That's when I notice that
the right thumb, especially the pad, is swollen. We discuss whether I should go see a doctor
and decide to put off the decision until we've filled up the car with gas. To add insult to injury, the shop didn't have
the raspberry fudge!
Car being gassed up, I decide a visit to an emergency care
center is not a bad idea. The doctor
examines me and gets me X-rayed. The
good news is that nothing is broken and the leg scrape is just that, but I now
know I have bad arthritis in my hands.
Age is a terrible thing!
At the doctor's suggestion we pick up an arm support at a
store, and Vicky drives us back to Cedar Breaks. After the past 2 days it seems that Cedar is
not the only thing that breaks around here!
I'm under instructions to use ice and pain killers and rest my
hand. So poor Vicky has to do all the
work.
