Days 124-126 - Friday thru Sunday - Back at Cedar Breaks

Days 124-126 - Friday thru Sunday - Back at Cedar Breaks

Time to take it easy.  Vicky suggests we take a drive to Duck Creek Village - about 10 miles from here - as we need milk and eggs.  I'm up for this.  We drive to the village and take 10 minutes to walk the main street, avoiding what seem like hundreds of ATVs on the road.  Turns out the big summer industry in this village is renting ATV's.

We look in the window of a real estate office and discover that they have lots of "RV lots" in their inventory.  Since we love this area, the idea of buying a small lot where we can park the RV for the summer is not without appeal.  We pick up a list of available lots and face a huge decision - lunch at a pizza place or a deli.  The deli has some interesting items but we both go for pizza.

We sit out on the deck overlooking a meadow and mountains, order a pan pizza and peruse the RV lot listings.  There's quite a wind so we have to hold everything down.  The pizza takes forever to come and we eventually move to another outside table that's more sheltered.  When the food does come it's disappointing - toppings are good but the crust is not what we're expecting.  It's heavy, but not thick.  Oh well, the view was great.

We head over to the real estate office and talk to an agent who gives us more listings and explains which places allow RV's and gives us a map.  We decide to check out a place that is 2 miles down the paved road and then  5 miles along a gravel road.  It's not a difficult drive and we see some great scenery and a grazing deer, but when we arrive in the area with the lots we find the internal roads are heavily rutted and would clearly be impassable for an RV after even the slightest rain.

By this time I'm feeling hot, my hand is hurting and the pizza is sitting heavily in my stomach, so I'm not very good company.  Vicky drives us back (the deer is still eating) and we decide that an RV lot in this area is not a good idea.

A quiet evening with the cats ends Friday.

Saturday we take it easy - Vicky has some writing work to do and I work on personal business.  Late in the day we drive over to Brian Head, a major ski resort,  We arrive in the middle of a country music festival- the band is not bad.  We choose not to pay $10 each to sit at a picnic table since you can enjoy the music from everywhere.

The principal summer business around here is renting mountain bikes.  You take them up in the chair lifts and then head downhill on any one of several trails of varying difficulty.  You can also take the chair lift to the top and either hike down or just walk around up top and ride down on the chair lift.  Since the chair lift has just closed for the day we add this to our list of possible things to do in the future and return home to the cats.

I'm able to grill a couple of sausages on the BBQ but Vicky is still doing everything else as my hand is still hurting.  Another early night.

Sunday dawns with clouds - no rain forecast but the sky says otherwise - so we decide to pack up the outdoor furniture.  My hand is feeling a lot better so I'm able to help with some of the work but Vicky is still bearing the brunt.  She doesn't complain and keeps giving me loving support.  I'm so lucky to have her.

In the afternoon the sun comes out.  We spend today on the computer - Vicky writing and me updating this blog.  This is our last day here for this year.  Vicky says she would love to build a house right here.  So would I but since it's National Forest land we'd soon be in trouble.  But we'll definitely be back next year.

One thing we've done is plan out our route for the rest of the summer and fall.  We have 4 nights in Cedar City with more plays and more teaching for me, after which we'll head over to Northern California.   A couple of weeks in the Sacramento area and then travel south, arriving in the Phoenix Valley mid October.  Stay tuned!
