Day 41 - Sunday - finding a new place
We started Sunday by cleaning the inside of the RV - a
constant battle as we are seldom in places with concrete driveways so dust
keeps coming in. Since we're leaving
Beaver Lake tomorrow and want to stay around this area, we have a map of areas
in the National Forest where we can dry camp (aka boondock or, as they call it
locally, dispersed camping). This means
we have no hookups, pay no money and just park with nature.
We've found the trouble with most such places is that
they're either miles up a dusty and often hilly or twisty road, or not very
level, or both. Today we really lucked
out. We drove up a county road that left
US16 less than a mile from Beaver Lake,
and soon found a beautiful spot in a forest clearing that we would even be able
to drive the RV through. We both agreed
that "This is the Place" but decided to check out other places in
case this one turns out to be occupied tomorrow.
We drove to Oroville campground, half way between Custer and
Hill City,
which we've driven past many times. We
spoke to the camp host, who said it's first come first served, but shouldn't be
a problem tomorrow. Trouble is I found
it quite noisy and no advantage over the forest site, but at least we now have
a second choice. The host also gave us
some more info on how to get jobs as an RV traveler.
All this being done we went back to the campground, started
our packing up, settled our account and had another campfire dinner. Don't have a lot to do tomorrow except get out
of here - but I have a job interview!
